Jessica Simpson made sure to protect her bag the second time around.
The “I Think I’m in Love With You” singer, 44, revealed she signed a prenuptial agreement before saying “yes” to Eric Johnson in 2014, which should make their split pretty clear if they decide to file for divorce. .
Simpson — whose reported net worth was $200 million as of 2022 — discussed her decision to enter into a prenup with Johnson after expressing regret over not signing one with her first husband, Nick Lachey.
The fashion designer was married to the 98 Degrees singer, 51, from 2002 to 2006.
Lachey wanted one, but she didn’t. She brought up the dilemma several times.
“We had a big argument about it,” Simpson told Access Hollywood of her conversation with Lachey while promoting her 2020 memoir, “Open Book.”
“And so, he finally said, ‘Okay.’ No marriage contract,’” she added.
However, Simpson later had a change of heart when their marriage imploded.
“During the divorce, I said to myself: ‘I should have signed this prenup,'” she recalled to the media.
“The Dukes of Hazzard” star made sure not to make the same mistake twice.
“Actually, we both were!” Simpson spoke about her and Johnson’s willingness to sign an agreement to protect themselves in the event of divorce before walking down the aisle more than a decade ago.
“We were connected both through divorce, through being heartbroken, and through knowing who we wanted for the rest of our lives,” she explained.
Simpson announced her separation from Johnson on January 13 after months of split speculation.
“Eric and I live separately and are going through a painful situation in our marriage,” she told People in a statement.
“Our children come first and we focus on what is best for them. We are grateful for all the love and support that has come our way, and appreciate privacy at this time as we work through this situation as a family.
Simpson met the former NFL tight end in 2010 and they got engaged six months later.
They only married in 2014 after welcoming daughter, Maxwell Drew, 12, and son, Ace Knute, 11, who served as bridesmaid and ring bearer, respectively, in their ceremony.
Simpson and Johnson welcomed their third child, daughter Birdie Mae, 5, in March 2019.
To date, neither has filed for divorce.
Although Simpson did not disclose details of the prenup, she appeared to give hints that her marriage to Johnson was over.
In November, eagle-eyed fans noticed that she hadn’t worn her wedding ring for several months, amid reports that they were “living very well separate lives.”
Johnson fueled split rumors when he stepped out in Los Angeles that month without wearing his precious metal band.
These weren’t the only clues.
Fans also noticed that Simpson hasn’t included Johnson on her Instagram page since September 2023, when she wished him a happy 44th birthday.
A month later, she shared a cryptic message and revealed she was recording an album, which she described as “an apology” to herself.
“Interviews in my Nashville music room where I discovered my singular magic,” added Simpson, who hasn’t released a non-holiday studio album since 2008, “This comeback is personal, it’s an excuse for myself for having endured all that I have done.” I don’t deserve it. »
