Jim Montgomery didn’t show his hand Saturday morning when asked which of his two goalies would get the call in net for Game 1 against the Maple Leafs.

“It’ll be one of the pad guys,” Montgomery said after the morning skate at Warrior Ice Arena.

More than seven hours later, we finally received our response. Jeremy Swayman led the Bruins onto the ice at TD Garden for warmups, with the 25-year-old getting the nod for Boston’s playoff opener against arch-nemesis Original Six.

With Swayman starting, the Bruins carried over their goaltending rotation from the regular season, with Boston now eliminating starts between Ullmark and Swayman over its last 26 games.

Ullmark played at an elite level over the latter part of the regular season – winning six of his final nine games while posting a .935 save percentage.

After earning his first All-Star nod in January, Swayman’s numbers dipped in the second half – with the 25-year-old netminder posting a .903 save percentage over his last 17 games.

But Swayman has excelled over the past two seasons against Toronto – a team with enough firepower to make even the toughest goalies tremble in front of the posts. During Boston’s current seven-game winning streak against the Maple Leafs, Swayman is 4-0-0 with a .961 save percentage.

Even though Montgomery remains mum on a starter this week, Don Sweeney noted Thursday that the Bruins already have a plan in place regarding their goaltending tandem.

“I’ll sum it up by the fact that we’re very confident in our goaltending,” Sweeney said. “I think that’s been a strength of our hockey club, certainly over the last couple of years. Noise that occurs outside is not necessarily filtered inside as much as you might think.

“Because our goalies know the plan, they know what their strengths are for our hockey club and how much we count on them. Performance and results will dictate some of that, but we know what the plan is, and so do they…and we’re comfortable with that.

Ilya Samsonov is the projected starter for Toronto in Game 1. Samonsov has posted an .890 save percentage in 40 games this season and is just 1-2-2 with an .899 save percentage against the Bruins in seven career games.

Toronto will be shorthanded on Saturday, as forward William Nylander was not spotted on the ice during warm-ups. Nylander was deployed more as a third-line forward down the stretch for the Leafs, giving Toronto elite scoring talent further down the depth chart. Nylander played in every regular season game, scoring 40 goals and registering 98 points.
