Jennifer Lawrence made lewd and crude comments about former Vice President Mike Pence at the GLAAD Media Awards on Saturday – which left the crowd angry.
The star gave a profane and irreverent speech while honoring country musician Orville Peck with the Vito Russo Award.
“The Hunger Games” star said she “loved seeing so many humans who were able to dominate their field while remaining at their lowest. Not to mention being in a room with so many men and not needing mass.
She added that she “loves” the gay community, adding that her “first love” was a “homosexual” who she tried to “convert” for years. “But now I know that conversion therapy doesn’t work,” the Oscar winner explained. “Did you hear me Mike Pence?”
Then, much to the public’s delight, Lawrence stuck to the Republican Party. “Conversion therapy is not real. Even if you think it worked on you,” she said of the former Indiana governor.
She added the joke below the belt: “You know he’s in New York tonight? He received a Kids’ Choice Award for strangest dk.
(We don’t even know what that means, but we’ve reached out to a Pence representative for comment on Lawrence’s speech.)
Pence, married to his wife Karen since 1985, has previously been criticized by LGBTQ activists for supporting conversion therapy and opposing same-sex marriage.
In 2017, around 200 protesters with glow sticks, hula hoops and rainbow flags held a “Queer Dance Party” in front of his residence.
Pence also reportedly supported the Religious Freedom Restoration Act as governor of Indiana, which was criticized as anti-LGBTQ legislation.
HBO’s John Oliver has also previously taken aim at Pence, with a parody book about his pet rabbit.
Regardless, Lawrence went on to talk about her friendship with Peck, who she met at a party. “After exchanging numbers and live texting during ‘Housewives,’ we quickly took it to the next level,” she said.
Also present at the gala were Jennifer Hudson, Uma Thurman and Don Lemon.
