Jazz Chisholm Jr. suffers anterior cruciate ligament injury, may need surgery

CHICAGO — Jazz Chisholm Jr. is expected to be placed on injured reserve with a left anterior cruciate ligament injury, according to manager Aaron Boone, who said the Yankees are still working to determine the severity of the injury and whether surgery will be necessary.

“We’ll probably have a better idea after all the doctors come back in the next 24 hours,” Boone said. “He’s disappointed because he wanted to be in the lineup today. He woke up today and said, ‘I’m playing today.’ Let’s see what we have, and hopefully it’s not something too long.”

Chisholm underwent an MRI Tuesday after injuring his left elbow while sliding toward home plate during the Yankees’ 12-2 loss to the White Sox on Monday night at Guaranteed Rate Field.

In that play, Chisholm scored from second base on an infield single by Anthony Volpe in the fifth inning. Television replays showed Chisholm rotating his left arm and shoulder between innings in the dugout. X-rays taken at the stadium came back positive, according to Boone.

Chisholm remained in the game to play defense at third base, but replaced pinch hitter Ben Rice when his spot in the batting order opened up in the seventh inning. He initially said he was “not too worried” about the injury.

“I still had adrenaline, so I didn’t feel it right away,” Chisholm said. “An inning went by, I was sitting there, and I started to feel it a little bit.”

Acquired from the Marlins on July 27 in exchange for three prospects, Chisholm provided the Bombers with an instant spark, including becoming the first Yankee to hit seven home runs in his first 12 games with the club.

In 14 games for New York, Chisholm is hitting .316 (18-for-57) with one double, seven home runs and 11 RBIs.

“He’s had a huge impact on us,” Boone said. “Hopefully it’s a shorter period of time and we can get him back on track. It’s definitely tough not having him around, given what he’s meant to this team already. We’ll just do our best to support him and get him back on track.”

Chisholm is still with the Chicago club and is expected to be placed on injured reserve in the coming days, potentially to add a starting pitcher to the roster, as Wednesday’s starting pitcher is still listed as TBA.

Boone said in Chisholm’s absence, DJ LeMahieu and Oswaldo Cabrera would both play third base; Cabrera started Tuesday against right-hander Jonathan Cannon. Boone added that Oswald Peraza could also be considered for a promotion from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

“We’re just going to mix and match and see what makes the most sense,” Boone said.
