Jay Leno wins guardianship of dementia-afflicted wife Mavis as judge tells emotional TV legend ‘everything you do is right’

Jay Leno has officially been granted guardianship of his wife Mavis Leno due to her ongoing battle with dementia.

People reported that during a hearing earlier today in Los Angeles Superior Court, Mavis’ attorney said she agreed with the conservatorship.

The former Tonight Show host petitioned Los Angeles Superior Court in January to be appointed conservator because her condition leaves her unable to manage her own affairs.

In court Tuesday, the judge agreed, saying, “I think she’s in the least restrictive environment.” I think she is very well looked after by Mr. Leno.

The outlet reported that she addressed Leno, 73, saying: “Everything you do is right. I am fully aware that this is a difficult time,” before confirming that he was fit to be her conservator.

Leno also told the court he was planning his estate and inspecting his wife’s will.

In a filing last week supporting Leno’s motion, his lawyer, Ronald Ostrin, said his diminishing mental capacity had brought sadness to their otherwise “perfect” marriage of 43 years.

“According to (Mavis’) neurologist, Dr. Hart Cohen, she has advanced dementia and sometimes doesn’t know her husband Jay, or his date of birth,” Ostrin said.

“She’s very disoriented, ruminating about her deceased parents and her mother who died about 20 years ago.”

Dr. Cohen told Ostrin that Leno, 73, “loves his wife very much and wanted to talk to her about this matter out of respect.”

Ostrin says he reviewed all of Dr. Cohen’s medical records before speaking privately with Mavis herself.

“We had a lengthy opportunity to speak and we discussed her wishes and desires regarding the (guardianship) proceeding as well as her testamentary wishes,” he wrote.

‘MS. Leno was a lovely person and although it was obvious she suffered from cognitive impairment, she still has a charming personality and is good at communicating.

Dr. Cohen added, “She expressed a desire to vote and told me a little about her philanthropic work.

“She had great faith and trust in Mr. Leno and relied on him for protection and guidance.”

After completing his investigation into Mavis’ condition and interviewing Leno, Ostrin supported the comedian’s conservatorship motion.

In a brief, exclusive interview with DailyMail.com in January, just after filing for conservatorship, Leno said of Mavis: “She’s fine, everyone’s fine, we’re fine.” I just made a will, in case something happens.

In her court filing, Leno’s attorneys said Mavis “does not have the necessary capacity to execute the estate plan” due to her “major neurocognitive impairment (including dementia).”

The legal documents added: “Jay is fully capable of continuing to meet Mavis’ physical and financial needs, as he did throughout their marriage.”

“Jay wishes to execute an estate plan, including a revocable trust and will, that will cover the needs of Mavis and Mavis’ brother and her only living heir besides Jay.”

The couple were spotted attending his comedy show in West Hollywood last week, pictured holding heads as they left The Improv.

The couple, dressed in casual outfits, appeared to be in good spirits before leaving in Jay’s red sports car.
