Jason Kelce claims he and his brother Travis were behind the NFL’s idea to move the Super Bowl to a three-day weekend

Jason Kelce joked that he and his brother Travis’ “New Heights” podcast was the impetus for Commissioner Roger Goodell’s latest NFL proposal.

Earlier this week, Goodell suggested the NFL could soon move to an 18-game regular season (up from 17), which would cause Super Bowl Sunday to be moved to Presidents’ Day weekend, when U.S. fans have Monday off.

And while recently retired Jason won’t be part of these changes himself, he believes he and Travis were ahead of the curve.

“The best part is that the Super Bowl is moved to President’s Day,” Jason said of Goodell’s idea. “And we’ve talked about it before. I think we actually achieved that. I don’t think the NFL had this in mind at all.

“We’ve been talking about doing the Super Bowl over a three-day weekend long before this was released. So ‘New Heights’ – you can thank us for being able to celebrate Super Bowl weekend for a three-day weekend.

Jason suggested renaming Presidents Day to Super Bowl Weekend and keeping it as a national holiday.

“Nobody celebrates Presidents Day,” he said. “It’s a forgotten party.”

Both brothers also agreed that the potential move to 18 games should result in a second bye week.

“I think (Bengals quarterback) Joey Burrow said it: If you want to give us more days we have to play, or more weeks we have to play, give us a damn bye week or something like that. .. or an extra, I don’t know,” Travis said.

Earlier this week, Burrow wrote on X: “18 games? 2 weeks off,” in response to Goodell’s suggestion.

Speaking on The Pat McAfee Show, Goodell said: “I think we’re good at 17 (games) now,” Goodell said. “But look, we’re thinking about how we continue. I’m not a fan of the preseason. The reality is I’d rather trade a preseason game for a regular season game any day. It’s about simply choose quality.

“If we get to 18 and two (weeks off), it’s not an unreasonable thing,” he added. “The other thing it does, (Super Bowl Sunday) ends on Presidents Day weekend, which is a three-day weekend, so it’s Sunday night and you have then Monday off.”

Until 2021, the NFL only played a 16-game regular season.

The decision to extend to 17 was approved by only 51 percent of NFLPA voters.
