Jarren Duran des Red Sox will get a warm ovation from his next At-Bat while his struggle touches us all

Boston – Jarren Duran is going to get an ovation next time he is going to the Fenway Park beat. It will be thunderous, but in a way hot. It will be sincere, but of the intestine. And that will have absolutely nothing to do with the escape, the MVP Duran caliber season gave the Red Sox in 2024.

In the fourth episode of the Documentary in Eight Parties of Netflix, “The Clubhouse: A Year with the Red Sox”, which will be available on Tuesday, Duran reveals that he had a suicide attempt – apparently in 2022, which was a season of difficulties for the 25 -year -old voltiseur. AthleticsJen McCaffrey, who was one of the media members who received a copy of the documentary before his release, reports that Duran spoke with a frankness of his mental health in the fourth episode, entitled “Still Alive”.

Duran discussed these questions in past interviews, but it was the first time that he spoke publicly of suicide. What is done, in an instant, is to transform this sensational talented ball player – he is now 28 years old – into one of us. Considering that Duran considered suicide forces all have an accounting of the people we know who, for a myriad of reasons, felt obliged to take their lives.

For some, he is a family member, a friend or a colleague. Or he is one of the relatives of our friend. He is the child at the bottom of the street. He is someone you have not seen for years, the news arriving through an article in the newspaper, or a publication on Facebook or a story that is mentioned during a school meeting.

He touches us all. And it will therefore be for fans of the Red Sox the next time they will see Duran on the field in Fenway, whether the series of Monday evening against the Blue Jays de Toronto or Tuesday’s match.

It will not be the first time that Red Sox fans have supported a player who goes through trouble getting out of the field.

On June 17, 1986, the mother of the third basis of the Red Sox, Wade Boggs, was killed when the car she was driving was wide by a cement truck. Boggs returned home to Florida to be with his family and attend the funeral of Sue Boggs. He returned after having missed six games and was aligned in Fenway for the Boston’s June 23 match against New York Yankees. Boggs received a standing ovation from the 35,355 fans that wrapped the place. An emotional bogg felt forced to get out of the striker’s box.

“It sounds so much with me right now,” said Boggs in 2016 when he returned to Fenway for the retirement of his n ° 26. “I watched the referee and I said:” Are we going to start the game? “And he said,” No, I appreciate it. “The fans were so favorable, so wonderful.”

They did not applaud because Boggs directed the American League by hitting at the time, or because he was on his way to the third of his five career shot titles in what turned out to be a career in the fame of fame. Seeing Boggs by the plate that night was to see a man who had just returned to work after losing his mother in tragic circumstances. Who couldn’t identify with this?

And so it will be for Duran. SOX fans applauded wildly last season while Duran submitted an oblique bar line .285 / .. 342 / .492 and led the American league in double (48) and triple (14). They applauded while Duran’s formerly erratic external defense improved to a certain extent that it was in the discussion on the Golden Gloves. They applauded it for the two-point circuit in the star match which allowed the victory of the victory of the AL 5-3 on the NL.

Duran had some disturbing incidents on the ground.

In 2022, after playing a ball in the outside field in Kansas City, he had to be retained by his teammate Alex Verdugo when he started jaws with the fans. Last August, in Fenway, a micro living on Nesn picked up Duran by shouting a homophobic insult, probably intended for the fan of Loudmouth which can be heard screaming on it. Duran was suspended for two games in this case.

Red Sox players mocked in Fenway is not new. It happened to Ted Williams, who always said that he wanted to be the greatest striker who ever experienced, and by most of the measures, that was just that. It happened in Carl Yastrzemski, who replaced Williams in the left field and forged his own career in the renowned temple.

Duran was wrong on both occasions, but things were tried and life continued.

Duran talks about fans in the Netflix documentary.

“I have the impression that people see us like zoo animals sometimes, in this large ole cage, throw popcorn, take a photo with you, attract your attention, scream your name,” said Duran.

“Sometimes some fans take it too seriously,” said Duran. “I have the impression that they cross the line when they talk about my mental health and make fun of me for that, calling me weak. It triggers me when you start talking about my mental health. Part of this loneliness, some people take care of it better than others. ”

To move forward, fans will delight Duran or Razz Duran as the circumstances dictate. It’s later. But he has a collective attack to come to Fenway the next time he is marble.

I have not seen the Doc Netflix on the Red Sox, and I cannot therefore judge its precision or its artistic talent, but the title of this episode on Duran – “always alive” – is something that we can all encourage.
