President Trump published the pardons this week to more than 1,500 defendants of January 6, but a 71 -year -old woman refused the president’s leniency offer, telling NPR that it would be a dishonor of the truth of what ‘went that day.
“I broke the law that day, the final point. Black and white,” Pamela Hemphill told NPR Well -considered of the role she regrets playing the Capitol that day. “I am not a victim, I am a volunteer.”
Hemphill was an ardent supporter of Trump when she joined thousands of people in Washington, DC, who tried to stop the certification of President Biden’s electoral victory in 2020.
Food by Trump’s repeated lies that the election had been faked against him and his supporters, Hemphill was one of those who burst into the corridors of the Congress, which led the legislators to flee and hide.
Pardon now in the light of his actions, Hemphill said: “It would be a slap opposite the police officers of the Capitol, the rule of law and our whole nation”.
“I would contribute to their false propaganda according to which they continue to shed light on the nation and everyone, that it was a peaceful manifestation.”
Hemphill pleaded guilty to a single accusation of offense for the parade, sticking or demonstration in the Capitol building, and spent 60 days behind bars. After her release, she said, she started spending time in online groups with rioters on January 6.
In these forums, she said, Hemphill realized how disinformation spread and how difficult it was to fight against lies with the truth.
“When I discovered that they were lying about a lot and I brought them facts, they got angry with me. And then they finally made me leave, so I started to do my own research”, said Hemphill.
“It’s like, how was I so naive? Well, I see now how I was, because it is a cult and you are lightened, and they lie to you and say that there is this Deep state, and the Doj is against Trump and all these garbage. “
After his arrest, social media users nicknamed Hemphill “Magi Granny” and launched his image as proof of what they said to be the political persecution of the Participants in the riot. But when she became more aware of the lies that Trump had pushed in her unsuccessful attempt to remain in office, said Hemphill, she came to reject this support.
When Trump commented that his conviction was “horrible!”, Hemphill replied “please @realdonaldtrump does not use me for nothing, I am not a victim of January, I pleaded guilty because I was guilty !
Hemphill said that this moment had led to an indignation attack on social media, but that it will not stop trying to correct the file of what really happened that day.
“It was horrible, the attacks and what I had to pass to keep my voice there, because it is my amendments to change the story of January 6. It is so important that people have the facts.” Hemphill said.
“Trump is a criminal. He has broken the law. He must continue this story that the Doj is armed against him and his disciples. And we know that this is not true. There has been enough evidence to prove it. “”
In May, Trump was found guilty of falsifying commercial files. He received unconditional release 10 days before his inauguration as president, which means that he has not risked prison, fines or other sanctions.
