Jamie Raskin suggests new home for ‘partisan’ Supreme Court in searing take

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Mary.) suggested the Republican National Committee headquarters could house the Supreme Court after conservative justices showed willingness to recognize some form of presidential immunity, lawyers said Thursday of former President Donald Trump.

Raskin, during an appearance on MSNBC’s “The ReidOut,” weighed in after Trump’s lawyer, D. John Sauer, argued that the president could order the assassination of a political rival or order the armed to stage a coup without being prosecuted for his actions.

Host Joy Reid, who noted that Trump’s federal election interference case could be moved to the Washington Circuit Court of Appeals and thus further delay the trial until after Election Day, called the majority of the Supreme Court as “clearly political” before returning to Raskin.

“Well, these are politicians who, unlike me, are not even subject to popular elections. They should move the Supreme Court to the RNC headquarters because they are acting like a bunch of partisan operatives,” Raskin said.

He then referenced a question from Justice Samuel Alito, who suggested that democracy could be in danger if a president could be criminally prosecuted by a political opponent after leaving office.

Raskin called it the “most astonishing” observation from the hearing and the question adheres to Trump’s “narcissistic and criminal worldview.”

“I mean, throughout American history, we have said that presidents are subject to criminal prosecution if they commit crimes,” noted Raskin, who pointed out that Gerald Ford pardoned Richard Nixon and that Bill Clinton had agreed to give up his law license to avoid criminal prosecution. pursuit.

He continued: “Now they’re saying, ‘Well, if you’re really mean to Donald Trump and you hold him accountable like every other American citizen is, then he’ll really bring down the government, he’ll really bring out the power. big guns and we can’t afford them. It’s a kind of masochistic capitulation to the authoritarianism of Donald Trump.”
