Oscar winner Jamie Foxx admitted Sunday that “when you’re in Hollywood…God escapes sometimes.”
The 57-year-old, who suffered a stroke and a weeks-long coma in 2023 due to a brain hemorrhage, said the near-death experience brought him closer to God.
“When it happened, I said, ‘If I’m able to get through this – and God spoke to me in a way, you know, when you’re in Hollywood, you know, God slips away sometimes.’ , he told Extra. “But when I talked to him, he said, ‘I need you to sit here for a second, but when you come back out there, I’m not telling you to be an angel, but you have something different.'”
He added that there are “no more bad days” and that he no longer takes life for granted. “You take a photo with your cell phone and you tap on this filter, and it brightens, that’s what my life looks like now.”
“When you dream of what you want to be, you only dream of good things… career, home, you never dream of tragedy,” he added. “When a tragedy really happens, you need strong family and friends, which is why the two ladies who are with me tonight, Corinne Marie Foxx, my daughter, and Anelise Estelle Foxx kept me grounded a way that is difficult to interpret within these parameters.”
He compared the care his daughters gave him to the way Michael Corleone defended his own father after he was shot in the classic film. The godfather. “You have to show up and really take charge,” he said, “and she did that and that’s why I’m here.”
To paraphrase Samuel Johnson, nothing focuses the mind like a near-death experience.
Hollywood not only needs God to save its own souls, but one of the main reasons art is so lacking these days is the refusal to recognize God as part of the human condition – the importance of the soul. As the counterculture pushed God away in the late ’60s, that hole filled with more and more nonsense: cults, self-esteem, gurus, sex, the normalization of narcissism, and, above all, policy. Art should enrich the human spirit and bring us closer to God. I look for God in everything I look at.
For example, right now I’m looking The offerthe 2022 limited series on the making of The godfather. It’s a good series, addictive and interesting, but it’s not really about anything other than overcoming obstacles to make a film. There is something hollow, something missing. It’s all plot-plot-plot, which is good to a point. It’s no Sopranoswhich concerned the soul.
Maybe Foxx can bring some of that to his work. There’s definitely an audience for it.
