James Woods thanked first responders in messages shared online for keeping his community safe before evacuating his home as flames from the Palisades Fire roared through the hills in his backyard.
Woods, 77, captured footage of the wildfire as he evacuated. The wildfire broke out Tuesday morning in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles.
Los Angeles Fire Department officials confirmed the Palisades Fire broke out after 11 a.m. near the southeast side of Palisades Drive. Evacuation orders were issued as the fire grew to approximately 200 acres.

“We have been fortunate to have the Los Angeles Fire Department and Police Department who do their jobs so well,” Woods wrote. “We are safe and outside. There are several elementary schools in our neighborhood and there has been a huge community effort to evacuate children safely.
“I cannot speak more highly of the Los Angeles Fire and the LAPD.”

Woods’ video appeared to show flames burning on the side of a hill near a home. It’s unclear if the property in his video was damaged by the fire.
“I hope everyone gets out safely,” he wrote in another message showing thick smoke covering the sky.
An extreme threat of wildfires covers much of Southern California through Wednesday, as a “life-threatening, destructive and widespread windstorm” is expected Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday morning, officials said. Los Angeles forecasters from the National Weather Service.
