James Wood to be called up by the Nationals (source)

Wood, rated as the Nats’ top prospect and third overall by MLB Pipeline, will be recalled by Triple-A Rochester for Monday’s game against the Mets, a source told MLB.com. Grant Paulsen of 106.7 The Fan was first to report the impending transfer, which the club has not confirmed.

The 6-foot-7, 21-year-old from Maryland has dominated for the Red Wings this season. In 51 games, left-handed hitting Wood slashed .346/.458/.578 with 64 hits, 34 RBIs, 10 home runs and 10 stolen bases. He recorded a 1.036 OPS in 185 at-bats.

Wood used his speed, agility and size to excel on defense with a 1.000 fielding percentage (five games in right field, 24 games in center and 21 games in left).

He was named the International League Player of the Month for May after hitting .394 with seven home runs and 22 RBIs.

The Nationals acquired Wood from the Padres organization at the 2022 trade deadline in the Juan Soto blockbuster deal. At the time, Wood, a second-round pick in the 2021 draft out of IMG Academy, was playing in Single-A and was ranked as the 88th prospect in MLB.

Wood came to the Nats with shortstop CJ Abrams, left-hander MacKenzie Gore, outfielder Robert Hassell III (No. 8 prospect), right-hander Jarlin Susana (No. 10) and veteran first baseman/designated hitter Luke Sees. Wood will join Abrams and Gore in the Nationals clubhouse as key members of Washington’s future core already at the big league level.

Wood got to know his new teammates when he attended Major League spring training this year. He turned heads during camp and has since garnered attention all season.

“I don’t want to be a fan, but if I was a fan, I’d be looking forward to him coming here, too,” manager Dave Martinez said. ” It’s gonna be fun. »
