James Cameron warned his fans that the next Avatar: Fire and Ashes it may not be what they “signed up” for.
The title of the third film in the franchise was announced last August and is scheduled for release on December 19, following Avatar and its 2009 sequel. Avatar: The Way of Waterreleased in 2022.
Speaking about the latest installment, in a new interview with Empire magazine, Cameron said his goal was not to replicate what was done in the previous two films, but rather to make “brave choices” that weren’t necessarily expected.
He said: “It’s a tricky thing. We could be getting high on our own supply here, and everyone watching it is going, “Damn, that’s not what I signed up for.” » But if you don’t make courageous choices, you’re wasting everyone’s time and money. This alone is not enough to create success, but it is necessary. You have to break the mold every time.
Cameron also revealed that audiences can expect high-intensity situations, noting that while they may be taken to “places they don’t expect,” those places “will feel earned.”
He added: “We have some really clever action sets. You can get angry in this movie. But what excites me as an artist who recently turned 70 and has done all this is not only the opportunity to start again, but also to reach a level of character and plot that you have never seen before in a Avatar movie.”
As for the film’s current progress, Cameron continued: “It’s in good shape, I think. We’ve doubled the number of shots completed at this point in the game compared to movie two (and) the movies are about the same length. So that puts us way ahead of the curve, which is something I’ve never, frankly, experienced before.
Elsewhere, he recently confirmed that Michelle Yeoh will not star in the film but will feature in its sequel.
Yeoh was first announced to join the Avatar franchise in 2019. She will take on the role of Dr. Karina Mogue.
Cameron previously revealed that he shot scenes for the franchise’s third and fourth films in advance to avoid Stranger Things-style aging issues with the younger cast members. He also previously revealed that he was willing to end the franchise after the third film if The way of water was not a box office success.
In a four-star review from Avatar: The Way of Water For NMEAli Shutler wrote: “Bigger, bolder and definitely better than the original, Avatar: The Way of Water pushes the technical boundaries of cinema without looking like a scientific experiment. It really needs to be seen on the biggest screen possible through a pair of impractical 3D glasses. But unlike its predecessor, you won’t soon forget this experience.
