Hey, the planet is called Pandora. There must be a few surprises in James Cameron’s movie box set that might leave viewers perplexed, right?
At least that’s what crossed the director’s mind as he finished post-production on “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” the third installment of his space saga about ruthless capitalists displacing the indigenous Na’vi in their rapacious quest for Unobtanium.
In a new interview with Empire, Cameron noted that he is well ahead of time on the first sequel, “The Way of Water,” ahead of its release in 2022. The films were mostly filmed more than five years ago , with only a years-long visual effects and post-production process in their wake.
“He’s in good shape, I think,” he told the British media outlet. “We’ve doubled the number of shots completed at this point in the game compared to the second movie (and) the movies are about the same length. So that puts us way ahead of the curve, which is something I’ve never, frankly, experienced before. Laughing, he added that the process is “a little less nightmarish.” We’re getting to the point where we’re actually getting good at it.
“Yes, we have some really clever action set pieces,” Cameron said. “You can get angry in this movie. But what excites me as an artist who recently turned 70 and has sort of done all this is not only the opportunity to start again, but also to reach a level of character and d plot you’ve never seen before in a movie. The Avatar movie.
This seems like the position of an artist who really isn’t interested in offering more of the same. But as we know from other franchise films that have attempted to subvert their mythos a bit, or at least offer some narrative deviations, as “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” did, fans don’t want to sometimes no bold changes.
“We’re just starting to riff on it and twist and turn it,” Cameron says, of this third installment’s place in the overall five-film saga he has planned. “It’s a tricky thing. We could be getting high on our own supply here, and everyone watching it is going, “Damn, that’s not what I signed up for.” » But if you don’t make courageous choices, you’re wasting everyone’s time and money. This alone is not enough to create success, but it is necessary. You have to break the mold every time.
For our part, we’re just disappointed that “Avatar 3” is no longer called “Avatar: The Seed Bearer” as was rumored several years ago.
