Jack Draper summed up the attitude of bemused admiration with which his peers view Andy Murray’s recent change of racquet. “It’s very strange,” he said. “But he has a strange way of making things happen.”

Murray spoke in depth for the first time yesterday about his decision to switch to a Yonex racquet, after more than 20 years playing with Head.

“I felt like it was something I wanted to try,” said the 37-year-old, who faces his old rival Stan Wawrinka on Sunday in the first round of the French Open and is expected to retire this season .

“I don’t want to end my career thinking: Should I have tried it to see if it could have helped me?”

It was his ankle injury in Miami that allowed the world number 75 to change the situation. He went straight to a sports store to buy a supply of rackets and equipment and started DIYing.

This is typical of a tennis obsessive and Murray believes the sport is lagging behind others in terms of technical innovation.

“Tennis is a strange sport like that,” he said.

“Very few players make significant changes to their equipment during their career. In most sectors, things are changing a bit.

“I really enjoyed the process. I tried a lot of different rackets. This is something that has kept me busy during rehab and I found a racquet that I really like.

Dan Evans, who will play doubles with Murray this fortnight, added: “We talked about it a lot.

“He’s always looking for different things and that’s made him the player he is. It’s definitely not for lack of testing, that’s for sure – he’s been through that for a few hours. It’s more cool to see he’s always trying to improve.
