Jack Black Says Tenacious D Will ‘Come Back When It’s Time’ After Canceling Tour Due to Backlash

Tenacious D is on hiatus but will be back, according to Jack Black.

At the premiere of his new sci-fi feature film “Borderlands” on Tuesday night, Black spoke about canceling the remainder of his band Tenacious D’s tour after bandmate Kyle Gass made a widely criticized remark about the attempted assassination of former U.S. President Donald Trump.

“We need to take a break. Everyone needs a break at some point,” Black told Variety.

When asked If he’s been in touch with Gass since the tour’s cancellation, Black said, “Yeah, we’re friends. That hasn’t changed. These things take time sometimes… And we’ll get back to it when we feel like it’s right.”

The band cancelled the remaining dates of their tour last month after footage posted on social media of their concert in Sydney, Australia, on July 14 caused an outcry.

In a video filmed by spectators, Black presents Gass with a birthday cake on stage and tells him to “make a wish.”

Gass responded, “Don’t miss Trump next time,” referring to the assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania.

The exchange prompted an Australian lawmaker to call for the group to be expelled from the country.

Black told CNN in a statement at the time that he was “taken aback by what was said on the show.”

In the days following his comments, Gass apologized in a message posted on Instagram.

“The line I improvised on stage on Sunday night in Sydney was completely inappropriate, dangerous and a terrible mistake. I do not condone violence of any kind against anyone,” he wrote at the time.

He added: “What happened was a tragedy, and I am extremely sorry for my serious lapse in judgment. I offer my deepest apologies to those I have let down and sincerely regret any pain I may have caused.”

Gass has since been dropped by his Hollywood talent agent. His agent, Michael Greene of Greene Talent, told CNN last month that he had parted ways with Gass, but did not provide further comment.

CNN’s Jack Guy and Elizabeth Wagmeister contributed to this report.
