It’s time to relax

“Jimmy Kimmel Live” guest host Anthony Anderson opened Monday’s show with a joke about being thrust into the spotlight to comment on the assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump because of his previously scheduled guest-hosting stint on the ABC late-night series.

“Everybody is still reeling from the tragic events that happened at the Trump rally last Saturday,” Anderson said at the beginning of his monologue. “All weekend, I kept thinking, ‘I wonder what Jimmy Kimmel is going to say about this on Monday?’ And then I thought, ‘Oh, I’m Jimmy Kimmel on Monday.’”

Anderson, the Emmy-nominated “Blackish” star and former “Law & Order” actress, said earnestly: “Our hearts go out to the families of the victims.” He suggested that in the wake of Saturday’s violence, “I hope this is a moment where we can all step back from the hate and vitriol in our politics and maybe calm down.”

Anderson also pointed to the proliferation of conspiracy theories about the shooting Saturday at a Trump campaign rally by a 20-year-old Pennsylvania man that left one person dead and two others seriously injured. The shooter was shot dead at the scene by the Secret Service, which is under scrutiny for what turned out to be a massive security breach Saturday night in Butler, Pennsylvania, near Pittsburgh.

“If you want to stay sane during this crazy time, don’t go online,” Anderson advises. “There are crazy conspiracies popping up on both sides. Now you know how the far right created QAnon? Well, the far left conspiracy theories are now called Blue-Anon. Blue-Anon is like a support group for people who perform oral sex anonymously.”

Anderson also made a pertinent observation about the media coverage of the shooting and its aftermath.

“The award for worst article on the subject goes to Forbes, which retracted this stupid story: “Will Surviving Gunfire Be Donald Trump’s Next Appeal to Black Voters?” What? Getting shot doesn’t make you popular in the black community. If it did, then the most famous guy on the block would be Liam Neeson, and nobody gets shot more often than that, man. He’s the Irish 50 Cent.”

Anderson concluded his brief monologue on Trump by attacking the Republican nominee’s choice for vice presidential running mate and the former president’s adult sons, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump. Earlier Monday, Trump unveiled Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance as his choice for vice president.

“Vance has everything Trump is looking for in a running mate,” Anderson observed. “He’s white. He’s… well, that’s about it. He also looks like he had a baby with Eric and Don Jr.”
