Fashion-conscious Italian police are in revolt after receiving batches of pink masks to wear on duty, arguing that the “eccentric” color does not match their uniforms.

Police units in six towns have received FFP2 masks from the office of the Italian Covid-19 Emergency Commissioner Francesco Paolo Figliuolo.

After opening the boxes, many police officers refused to wear the “inappropriate” masks, prompting Stefano Paolini, the head of a police union, to write a letter to the police chief of the Ministry of Interior, Lamberto Giannini.

Paolini wrote that the decision to approve the purchase of pink masks for the police was “puzzling”. He argued that the color is “eccentric” compared to the police uniform and “risks calling into question” the image of the institution.

“We ask you to take immediate action to ensure that police officers fulfill their duty by wearing masks of a color (white, blue or black) consistent with the state police uniform,” he wrote. .

The masks were sent to police units in Pavia, Varese, Ferrara, Venice, Syracuse and Venice.

In a subsequent statement, Paolini said the problem arose not because of prejudice against the color pink, “but because the uniform is regulated.”

“On the basis of the oath taken, the uniform must be worn with decorum”, he added, while stressing that “in a period of growing aversion to the police, one must adopt sobriety and respect” .

The Corriere della Sera reported that the face masks were part of a consignment also sent to staff of other public institutions, including schools, hospitals and the civil protection office.

At the end of December, Italy reintroduced the requirement to wear face masks outdoors amid an increase in coronavirus infections caused by the Omicron variant. Wearing a mask was already compulsory in closed public spaces, including on public transport.
