‘It makes no sense’ to trade Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette

Toronto Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins said Sunday that he has fielded calls from other teams regarding first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. or shortstop Bo Bichette, but “it doesn’t “just doesn’t make sense for us” to make these exchanges.

“There will be occasional times when you talk to other executives where they ask if you’re considering this, and we just say it’s not something we’ve spent time on,” Atkins told MLB Network Radio Sunday. “Because they are so talented and such good teammates, they are attractive to other teams, so they will call.”

Both players are under contract with the Blue Jays through the 2025 season, and Atkins said he has had discussions with both about a contract extension.

Guerrero, 25, is hitting .291 with 5 homers and 26 RBIs this season. Bichette, 26, is hitting .241 with 4 homers and 25 RBIs.

“Of course, we’re in dialogue with them, and that’s something that’s going to continue,” Atkins told MLB Network Radio. “We believe in them. We believe in their future and hope there’s a way they can play here for a long time.”

The Blue Jays were tied for last in the American League East heading into Sunday’s games — 12½ games behind the New York Yankees — but Atkins said he wasn’t rushing to make changes, especially with manager John Schneider, for now.

“I just don’t believe in change (just) for the sake of change, or change for the sake of trying something different,” Atkins said. “We have to be better. I think John Schneider has been just part of the solution, and (he) will continue to be.”
