Thursday’s chaotic hostage release, which saw a crush of fighters push two captives through an agitated crowd, shocked viewers and sparked a crisis in the ceasefire of Israel-Hamas.
He also left the Israelis with at least one sustainable image: in hostage Gadi Moïse, 80, walking straight among masked armed men, with what seemed to be the weakest smiles on his face.

For many Israelis, the photo symbolized not only the resilience of an aged hostage after almost 16 months of captivity; This also testified to the particular Israeli way of life that Moses embodies.
Several of the messages have stressed that Moses is a Kibbutznik – a resident of the border community of Nir Oz who, before October 7, 2023, was known for his potato agriculture. But for the Israelis, the word “Kibbutznik”, especially when applied to an octogenarian, connotes more than a simple address.
While the Kibbutz movement of Israel has decreased over the past 40 years, at the start of the country – the youth of Moses – Kibbutz symbolized a pioneer ethics, a robust work ethics and a community spirit. In recent decades, Kibbutzniks included a disproportionate part of Israeli military and political leaders.
For some of those who shared the photo of Mozes, it was the message that has passed.
“It is the salt of the earth, a classic Kibbutznik,” published an Israeli on X.
“Wow Gadi Moses, Kibbutznik, 80, is doing the most difficult things in humanity,” published Ram Shefa, a former Israeli legislator, published on Facebook above the photo. “Welcome to the community of Nir Oz and Israel.”
“We have Gadi Moses, an 80 -year -old alpha, a Fort Kibbutznik,” wrote another Israeli on Facebook. “Survived for a year and a half and made a hero.”
The photo is the last instance, during this ceasefire, of the Israelis transforming an image of the sufferings of the hostages into symbol of national pride. First of all, the post-liberation tattoo of Mia Schem “We Will Dance Again” has become a mantra for the survivors of the Nova Music Festival massacre. More recently, Emily Damari’s hand – with breathtaking fingers – was transformed into a “rock on” symbol and was quickly adapted into a variety of graphics. More recently, Jews around the world paid tribute to Agam Berger, another hostage published Thursday, who braided the hair of his captive colleagues before their release.
The story of Moses had already spread through Israel before his release – how he tried to negotiate with terrorists to save his family and how his long -standing partner, Efrat Katz, was killed on October 7. His daughter and two grandchildren were also taken hostage, and released in the ceasefire in November 2023, just like the ex-wife of Moses.
The Israeli government has published images of Moses bringing together his three children, where his smile was replaced by tears while he hugged them and kissed them and, according to local relationships, learned for the first time that Katz was died on October 7.
But first, the character of Kibbutzik shone. One of the videos shows him sitting on a sofa, a few moments before seeing his children and saying in a hoarse voice: “I will do everything I can to rehabilitate Nir Oz.”
