Israeli company tried to disrupt India polls and peddle anti-BJP agenda: OpenAI

This influence campaign, called “Zero Zeno”, was led by the Israeli company STOIC.

New Delhi:

OpenAI, the makers of ChatGPT, said it acted within 24 hours to disrupt the “deceptive” use of artificial intelligence (AI) in a covert operation to influence the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.

This influence campaign, called “Zero Zeno,” was led by STOIC, a political campaign management company in Israel.

Threat actors attempted to leverage OpenAI’s powerful language models for tasks such as generating comments, articles and social media profiles criticizing the ruling BJP and praising the Congress, said the company led by CEO Sam Altman.

“In May, the network began generating India-focused commentary, criticizing the ruling BJP party and praising the opposition Congress party. We disrupted some activity focused on Indian elections less than 24 hours after they started,” OpenAI said.

OpenAI said it banned a group of accounts run from Israel and used to generate and edit content for an influence operation spanning X, Facebook, Instagram, websites and YouTube.

“This operation targeted audiences in Canada, the United States and Israel with content in English and Hebrew. In early May, it began targeting audiences in India with content in English,” the company said.

Responding to the report, the BJP called it a “dangerous threat” to democracy.

“It is absolutely clear and evident that @BJP4India has been and is the target of influence operations, disinformation and foreign interference, carried out by and/or on behalf of certain Indian political parties,” the minister said. State Electronics and IT, Rajeev Chandrasekhar.

“This is a very dangerous threat to our democracy. It is clear that vested interests within and outside India are clearly behind this phenomenon and must be investigated and addressed. “Thoroughly investigated and exposed, my view at this point is that these platforms could have published this much earlier, and not so late at the end of the election,” he added.

OpenAI said it has disrupted five covert operations in the past three months aimed at using our models to support deceptive activities on the Internet. “Our investigations into alleged covert influence operations (CI) are part of a broader strategy to achieve our goal of secure AI deployment.”
