Six dead and 35 injured, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, as the level of violence increases in the occupied West Bank.
At least six Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks on the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank, the Palestinian Health Ministry said.
The Israeli military said Tuesday that soldiers, police and intelligence services had launched a counterterrorism action, but gave no further details.
The identities of those killed were not immediately clear. The Health Ministry said 35 people were injured.
A spokesperson for the Palestinian Authority (PA) security forces said in a statement that Israeli forces “opened fire on civilians and security forces, injuring several civilians and several security personnel, one of whom is in critical condition.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the operation aimed to “eradicate terrorism.” An Israeli army spokesperson said the ongoing operation was nicknamed the “Iron Wall.”
Jenin Governor Kamal Abu al-Rub called the action an “invasion of the camp,” according to the AFP news agency.
“It came quickly,” he said. “Apache planes in the sky and Israeli military vehicles everywhere. »
Threat
The attack on Jenin, where the Israeli army has carried out multiple large-scale raids and incursions in recent years, comes just days after a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip took effect, and highlights the threat of further violence in the West Bank.
Before the Israeli action, Palestinian Authority security forces were carrying out a weeks-long operation to regain control of the city of Jenin, as well as the refugee camp.
Last week, an Israeli air raid on the refugee camp killed at least three Palestinians and injured many others.
On Monday, Israeli settlers burned vehicles and properties under the protection of Israeli forces, while injuring at least 21 Palestinians across the West Bank.
The Israeli military said it had opened an investigation into the incident, which it said involved dozens of Israeli civilians, some masked.
