Israeli airstrikes near Aleppo city kill several people, Syrian state media says

BEIRUT (AP) — Israeli airstrikes around the Syrian city of Aleppo killed several people early Monday, Syrian state media reported.

The official SANA news agency gave no precise assessment. It said the strikes took place on the southeastern edge of Aleppo.

“The aggression caused a number of martyrs and material losses,” SANA said.

Israel did not immediately acknowledge the strikes and rarely does so when it comes to Syria.

Syria and Israel have been at war since Israel’s creation in 1948. Syrian President Bashar Assad was supported by Iran during his country’s war years, and Israeli strikes have previously targeted Iranian positions and equipment .

The strikes also come as Israel battles Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Israel has separately struck targets in Lebanon and Hezbollah continues its cross-border fire into the country.
