Two days after Benjamin Netanyahu announced that he was raising the siege of Gaza, Israel still prevents food from reaching hungry Palestinians, said the UN, like the chief of the country center-left party said that his country became a pariah nation that “kills babies as a hobby”.
Only five aid trucks had arrived in Gaza on Tuesday afternoon and the haven workers had not been allowed to distribute even that the token expedition, said Jens Laerke, spokesperson for the United Nations Humanitarian Office (OCHA), said in Geneva of the press conference.
The Israeli authorities approved “about 100” other trucks to enter Gaza but have not yet let them cross, he said. Even this expedition would not do much to reduce generalized hunger after 11 weeks of almost total siege; It was only a fifth of what reached Gaza daily before the war, when people were well fed.
The Israeli officials responsible for the distribution of assistance in Gaza said that 93 trucks had entered Gaza on Tuesday, but had not answered questions on the issue of whether the food and the drugs they have transported had been authorized for the distribution.
The imminent famine in the territory has caused international outrage and strong diplomatic pressure on the Israeli Prime Minister to allow food to reach more than 2 million people trapped in Gaza.
Netanyahu announced on Sunday evening that he ended the headquarters in Gaza because a “famine crisis” would damage the global position of his country.
Yair Golan, the chief of the opposition democrats who was deputy chief of the Israeli army before entering politics, said that after an unjustly brutal campaign, a large part of the damage had already been caused.
The Netanyahu government made the country as isolated as South Africa in the apartheid era, he told Reshet Bet Radio.
“A healthy country of mind does not engage in the fight against civilians, does not kill babies as a hobby and does not define the expulsion of a population as objective,” he said.
Netanyahu attacked Golan’s comments as “defamations of disregarding anti -Semitic blood against the soldiers of the FDI and the State of Israel”, but Golan later doubled in his position at a press conference.
The War of Israel in Gaza began as a just campaign, he said, after Hamas killed around 1,200 people and kidnapped 250, in cross-border attacks on October 7, 2023, but had become a corrupt war. The left was too afraid to express themselves and should condemn what was more vocally, he added.
During most of the war, the opposition to Netanyahu among the Jewish Israelis focused on failure to bring the hostages or the conduct of the countryside, rather than on the death of Palestinians in Gaza, or hunger and destruction there.
The rare who focused on Palestinian sufferings were faced with a severe police under the Minister of Far Right Security, Itamar Ben-Gvir.
Police arrested anti-war activists who occurred near the Gaza border holding images of Palestinian children killed in Israeli air strikes on Monday, holding them overnight before freeing them for residential assignment. They included Alon-lee Green, co-director of the Palestinian-Israeli campaign group standing together.
“While peaceful demonstrators are dragged before the courts, the right -wing extremist settlers are allowed to illegally enter the Gaza, to carry out attacks against the Palestinians in the West Bank and to hold colony conferences on the Gaza border with full impunity, revealing a dangerous double standard in the use of the force of the State,” said together in a declaration.
Inside Gaza, the field and air intensification campaign of Israel added to the misery caused by a general hunger.
Israeli strikes killed at least 85 people on Tuesday, including attacks on a family home and a school used as a refuge in the north of Gaza which killed at least 22 people, more than half of women and children, said the Gaza Ministry of Health.
Israel earlier in the week expressed evacuation orders for all Central Khan Younis, the second largest city in strip, declaring it a “combat zone” and ordering its exhausted and hungry residents to move again.
Most people in the strip have moved several times in attempts to escape Israeli air strikes, although no part of Gaza was spared.
The number of deaths of Israeli attacks has now exceeded 53,000, more than half of them. There are more than 28,000 women and children among the dead, said dead women this week.
