Israel seeks US support against Palestinian statehood

JERUSALEM (Reuters) – Israel on Sunday called on the United States for bipartisan support against the creation of a Palestinian state, which it said would be a reward for Hamas and its support of Iran.

European Union members including Ireland, Spain, Slovenia and Malta have said they may recognize a Palestinian state this month, saying a two-state solution is essential for peace. sustainable.

The Israeli Foreign Minister, Israel Katzwho met with the top Republican in the House Elise Stefanik Earlier said that if a Palestinian state was created, Iran would use it as a base to “work toward the destruction of Israel.”

He told Stefanik that the United States should present a resolution to the International Energy Agency council next month to promote new sanctions against Iran to prevent that country from acquiring nuclear weapons and to support groups like Hamas.

Iran denies wanting to acquire nuclear weapons.

Stefanik played a key role in trying to stem protests that broke out on U.S. college campuses against Israel’s war in Gaza and in support of the Palestinians’ right to self-determination.

The war in Gaza erupted after Hamas launched a cross-border attack on Israel on October 7, killing 1,200 people and taking 253 hostage, according to Israeli counts.

Since then, at least 35,386 Palestinians have been killed, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.
