Israel Police launch investigation into melee at Shireen Abu Akleh’s funeral

TEL AVIV — Israeli police have opened an investigation into a violent melee that took place ahead of the funeral of a prominent American-Palestinian journalist, amid growing international condemnation of officers who fought with pallbearers trying to to walk to a church in Jerusalem.

Israeli officials said the officers who beat pallbearers on Friday were seeking to carry out a plan agreed upon with the family of Shireen Abu Akleh, the 51-year-old Al Jazeera journalist killed last week while covering a Israeli military raid in the West Bank, transporting the body in a vehicle.
