Gaza’s health ministry said it was working with the Red Cross to evacuate injured people stranded Tuesday morning at the Indonesian hospital in northern Gaza after the facility was bombed. At least 12 people were killed and dozens injured, according to the health ministry. The Israeli military said militants opened fire on its troops from inside the hospital and returned fire, but no shells were fired toward the facility. The Washington Post was unable to independently verify either side’s claims. Hamas officials said Tuesday that the militant group was moving closer to a possible truce that could include a deal to allow a number of female and child hostages out in exchange for a prisoner swap with Israel. Israeli officials have said they are open to a several-day pause in fighting to free the hostages, but they have stressed that a ceasefire is another matter and have made no public comments on any agreement. President Biden said Monday that he believes an agreement on the release of the hostages is close. Neither the United States nor Israel speaks directly to Hamas. Qatar played an intermediary role in the discussions.
