Israeli fighter planes bombed Tuesday evening the city of southern Gaza, Khan Younis, in an attempt to kill Mohammad Sinwar, one of the best leaders in Hamas in the enclave, according to two Israeli military officials.
The two officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not allowed to speak publicly.
Around the same time, the Israeli army said that its forces had struck a Hamas Hospital Command Center near Khan Younis. An Israeli military spokesperson refused to say if Mr. Sinwar had been targeted in this strike.
Smoke pillars that have been around the hospital after the bombing, according to videos of the scene checked by the New York Times. It was not clear if the hospital buildings were damaged during the strike.
Israel has threatened another major military offensive in the Gaza Strip, unless Hamas lay down its arms and donate the 20 living hostages it holds, as well as the remains of around 40 others. Hamas leaders refused to disarm themselves, adding that they will not free the captives unless Israel ended the war.
Sinwar would be one of the highest military commanders in Hamas in the Gaza Strip after more than a year and a half of devastating war with Israel. He is the brother of Yahya Sinwar, the head of Hamas, killed by Israeli forces last year, who organized the attacks of October 7, 2023 which sparked the war.
