The fight began with a dramatic first round as Cruz pursued Romero from the opening bell.

The challenger nailed his opponent several times in the first three minutes.

At the end of the first, Romero was staggering around the ring and was lucky to avoid a knockdown.

Although the writing already seemed to be on the wall, the American recovered well.

Over the next two rounds, he worked patiently with his jab and began timing Cruz with his right hand.

However, the momentum then swung back in the other direction as Romero was on the back foot again.

Cruz focused on attacking the body in the fourth and fifth rounds, and the American seemed to feel the effects as he was deducted a point for excessive holding.

As they passed the halfway point, the competition seemed to be going in Cruz’s favor as he hammered Romero from pillar to post once again in the seventh.

Before the start of the eighth, a doctor examined the American to make sure he was able to continue.

Romero got the nod, but didn’t last much longer.

Cruz lunged at him in the eighth round, coming away with hooks once again and prompting the referee to step in and stop the fight.
