Is this mammography warning just a pseudoscience?

A doctor published a serious PSA on mammograms. But is it actually based or a misleading pseudoscience?

In a Tiktok viral video with more than 1.5 million views, Dr. Goodbinder (@ dr.goodbinder) explained why he thinks that annual mammographs are dangerous.

He wants women to be tired of using them to detect breast cancer and know that there are other options.

A warning to anyone receives mammograms

According to Goodbinder, recent data indicates that mammograms can actually be harmful to certain patients.

“For 10,000 people to whom you give a mammography, eight people will die who would never have had breast cancer,” he started in the clip.

He continued to explain that many justify the use of machines saved hundreds of lives. Indeed, early detection of breast cancer leads to better survival rates.

However, the doctor said that he firmly believed in the hippocratic oath ready by doctors. The expression “first of all, do not hurt” is at the heart of the oath. He reminds doctors to be aware when processing patients.

“It hurts,” said the doctor about ordering the procedure. “You kill eight people for 10,000 mammograms.”

The doctor also argued that the assertion that hundreds of lives are saved by annual mammograms could be a false declaration.

“There is a ton of data that actually show that there is a 52% over-diagnosis when using mammography,” he said. “This means that we are dealing with many people who have never died breast cancer in the first place simply by doing mammography.”

The doctor recommends an “safer” mammography alternative

Goodbinder always thinks that it is essential to detect breast cancer, but said there were safer ways.

“You have a few options,” he said. “You can ultrasound, which is literally super definitive.”

He also argued that ultrasounds do not use radiation. Another alternative to mammograms recommended by the doctor included a thermogram.

“Ask them to take a thermal signature of your breast tissue and you can really see if there is a metabolic activity,” he said.

Is it just a common mammography myth?

According to an article by Johns Hopkins Medicine, this is one of the six current mammography myths that can potentially lead people to miss health screening, which is recommended each year for women over 40.

The article features Dr. Sarah Zeb, a breast imaging specialist at Johns Hopkins Medical Imaging. ZEB notes that mammography is regulated by the United States Food and Drug Administration and other governing entities. “Although a mammography uses radiation, it is a very small quantity and is in the medical guidelines,” she says.

In addition, the article notes that humans are exposed to a “constant background influence” in their daily life. “The dose of radiation of a mammography is equal to about two months of background radiation for the average woman,” said the article.

The FDA has published an article which indicates that thermography “has not been demonstrated as an autonomous test for breast cancer screening and the detection of the breast cancer of the beginning of state”. The article also indicates that patients who opt for thermography should not take the results as definitive if they do not also obtain another test such as mammography.

In the comments section, many users said they agreed with Goodbinder. However, not everyone agreed with advice.
