Is Australia captain Mitchell Marsh injured ahead of T20 World Cup 2024?

Australia captain Mitchell Marsh has clarified that it took him a little longer to recover from the hamstring injury he suffered while representing Delhi Capitals (DC) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024.

Marsh withdrew from the tournament, returned to Australia and is now preparing to captain the team in its first major competition. He has big responsibilities on his shoulders as the selectors have trusted him to lead the team despite the presence of ODI World Cup-winning skipper Pat Cummins in the team.

“It’s been progressively slow, but I’m finally getting there now and I can’t wait to get into the tournament. Initially we thought it was three weeks, but with the tendons it may take a little longer time and you have it sorted I have to keep feeling,” Marsh said.

He added: “Once I was ruled out of the IPL, we definitely took our time to do well. And I feel lucky to have had that little bit of extra time, a little bit of time at home to freshen up. Probably still have some time left. Hopefully I will start bowling soon. Finish these practice matches as a batting player and then we will step up.

Marsh jokingly added that one of the benefits of leading the team is that he no longer has to bowl. He appreciated the talent prevalent in the team, given that they have so many options with the ball in players such as Marcus Stoinis and Cameron Green. He talked about a good planning approach from the start and so this allows him to be clear that he will not play unless there is a situation that absolutely requires him to do so, putting the interests of the team above.

Australian team: Mitchell Marsh (c), Ashton Agar, Pat Cummins, Tim David, Nathan Ellis, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Starc, Marcus Stoinis, Matthew Wade, David Warner, Adam Zampa.

Traveling reserves: Jake Fraser-McGurk, Matt Short
