Following the death of Mahsa Amini at the hands of Iranian vice police and the violent protests that followed, the Iranian women’s basketball team posted a picture on social media without their hijabs.

Iran’s women’s basketball team took off their hijab and posted a photo on Instagram, protesting gender apartheid. They posted the photo with the tagline: Woman Life Freedom.

The protests in Iran began after the death of Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini in the custody of the “morals police”. Amini was arrested for allegedly wearing an “inappropriate” hijab. After her death, protests were led by women against Iran’s strict hijab rules, resulting in a major challenge to the ruling Islamic regime.

Iranian archer Parida Ghasemi has taken off her hijab in protest during an award ceremony in the Iranian capital, Tehran. In a video that has gone viral, people can be heard cheering and applauding Ghasemi’s actions. However, in an Instagram post, the archer said the hijab fell off due to the wind and it was not a sign of protest. She said she had “no problem with the hijab”.

Last month, Iranian mountaineer Elnaz Rekabi competed without a headscarf and was applauded. She too later said she did it unintentionally and apologized.
