iPhone 16 Redesign Leaked: Just Hype or a Meaningful Facelift?

There’s a lot of buzz around the upcoming iPhone 16, especially after a recent leaked video of a retail case gave us a glimpse of its design. This makes me think…what’s really new about this design? Or…is this all just the usual hype as September approaches?

What’s new with this design?

From the leaked video, it seems that iPhone16 should bring some interesting changes. The most notable update is the introduction of the capture button on the bottom right of the phone. The case has a cutout, so it could be a capacitive button, as some have speculated earlier.

This button should be customizable, allowing you to quickly access functions like the camera, flashlight, or other shortcuts right from the side of the phone.

On the left side, we have three buttons – this is where the volume rockers are, as well as the ringer/mute switch, which, given that there’s no cutout for it, could be replaced by the 15 Pro’s action button. Another change is the alignment of the camera lenses on the back, which has been rumored for what seems like ages now. It looks like the change is to the iPhone16 to be able to film space videos for Vision Pro.

Technically, this isn’t a new design per se. We have a similar camera lens alignment on the iPhone 12. It’s only considered “new” because the camera island itself looks thinner than the 12, and because the 13, 14, and 15 didn’t have it.

Compared to iPhone 15, 14 and 13

To understand the iPhone 16The iPhone design is better, let’s take a quick trip down memory lane and compare it with the iPhone 15, 14 and 13.

  • iPhone15: THE iPhone15 stuck with the flat edge design introduced with the iPhone12. It had a slight bump on the back of the camera with a diagonal arrangement for the lenses. It brought Dynamic Island in place of the notch. iPhone 15 The smartphone also brought some incremental improvements to the camera system and a new chip for better performance. It maintained a similar premium look with its aluminum and glass construction.
  • iPhone 14: Similar to the iPhone 15THE iPhone 14 also featured a flat-edged design. The major changes between the 13th and 14th were mostly internal, with improvements to the camera system and battery life. The design has remained pretty much the same, with minor changes in the camera layout.
  • iPhone 13: THE iPhone13 This is where Apple first introduced the diagonal camera layout, which was a notable change from iPhone 12. It also had a slightly smaller notch on the front, which provided a bit more screen real estate. The design was otherwise very similar to that of the iPhone 12with flat edges and an aluminum frame.

Compared to these models, the iPhone16Design changes are more visible. The addition of the Capture button, reduced camera shock, and possible Action button suggest Apple is aiming to shake things up a bit. In the Apple way, I might add – but it still shakes things up.

What is not new?

Despite these changes, certain aspects of the iPhone16 the design remains consistent with previous models. The overall flat-edged look is something we’ve seen since the iPhone12. It’s a design language that Apple seems committed to, and for good reason: it offers a rugged, premium feel that many people like, including myself.

The front of the phone, from what we can see, doesn’t change much either. We will probably have the Dynamic Island of iPhone 15. The rest of the buttons and where they are placed, as well as the overall form factor, are also likely to remain similar, making the iPhone 16 This may sound familiar if you’re currently using a recent iPhone model.

Is the new iPhone 16 design a major overhaul?

So, this is the iPhone16Is the design a major overhaul, or is it just hype? Honestly, it seems to be a bit of both.

On the one hand, the introduction of the Capture button and the features it could bring is an exciting change. It suggests that Apple is looking to refine and improve the iPhone’s design. Furthermore, the video doesn’t give away everything. It makes you wonder how thin the phone will actually be – I can’t really tell how thin it will be judging by a case.

On the other hand, most of these changes are incremental, and that’s obvious. They’re not as revolutionary as, say, the jump from the iPhone 8 to the iPhone X, which introduced Face ID and an edge-to-edge display. The basic design language remains the same, with flat edges and a similar front-end appearance. The changes are more about refinement than revolution — for better or worse.

But hey, everything is subjective in this world. Including a redesign. I can understand people who consider major changes just because Apple isn’t making any changes…and I can understand people who think it will look like any iPhone. That doesn’t make it any less exciting. I’m actually quite curious to see what the capture button does and how it makes the iPhone even more convenient. Which it will most likely do. And given that it looks like the iPhone 16 Pro Max is indeed getting a more major overhaul (if you can put it that way), I’m excited about the iPhone16 event even more.
