iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max could support fast charging up to 40W using a wired connection to top off batteries faster

Apple has been slow to roll out fast charging to its devices, but with the launch of the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, the company is reportedly looking to close the gap by introducing a maximum 40W output over a wired connection. These aren’t the only improvements coming to the upcoming flagships, as Apple is also expected to introduce an upgrade to MagSafe wireless charging.

Besides wired charging, the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will reportedly support MagSafe wireless charging up to 20W.

The iPhone 15 lineup can support maximum charging speeds of up to 27W with a compatible USB-C charger. Unfortunately, authorized MagSafe wireless chargers can only charge batteries up to 15W. While this setup is fine, all four iPhone 15 models will need to be plugged in or placed on the MagSafe charging accessory for hours before the battery reaches 100%. Fortunately, ITHome reports that this won’t be the case with the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max.

Likely using a compatible USB-C charger, we could see both flagships charge their batteries faster. The obvious reason for introducing higher charging support for the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max is that they are expected to feature larger batteries than their current-gen predecessors. The top-end iPhone 16 Pro Max is rumored to feature a cell with a higher energy density, leading to an increase in battery life. So 40W wired charging support could be present to help reduce charging times without degrading the battery life cycle a bit sooner.

It’s not confirmed whether Apple plans to leverage the same “Glacier technology” that OnePlus used on the Ace 3 Pro to increase power density without compromising the thickness of the phone, but we’ll find out more information in the coming weeks, so stay tuned.
