The winners of the Peabody Prize rang the alarm on threats against democratic standards, criminal justice reform and progress in diversity and inclusion objectives while the 85th annual congratulations were awarded to Beverly Hills on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the chief of “Saturday Night Live” Lorne Michaels talked about the heart while he accepted the institutional prize for Peabody for his comedy series NBC Sketch. It was the sixth Peabody in total collected by the late evening show that bowed in 1975.

Referring to the special offers “SNL50” broadcast in February, Michaels said: “All these people returning from the first season, all in a play playing and applauding were one of the most moving experiences of my life.”

Michaels, 80, also did what seemed to be an oblique wink with the endless unsubscribe of speculation in the long -term level of the show.

“I do not foresee an sixties,” he said after referring to “SNL50”. “Taking what I can do is somehow everything that makes me happy. I also get angry,” he said.

Michaels closed with a cry at Peabody Prizewhich are administered by the Grady School of Journalism and Mass Communication from the University of Georgia.

“When you come to the Peabodys, unlike other price discounts, you know you are in the right piece. It’s really an honor to be here, then thank you,” he said.

There have also been many calls for supporting public media and opposition to the efforts of the Trump administration aimed at prohibiting federal funding for the PBS, the NPR and other public and arts media. The broader subject of administration’s efforts to reduce federal spending in general has also been criticized by many winners in violation of dear democratic standards.

Dave Biscubing, chief investigation journalist of the ABC subsidiary in Phoenix, was praised for his dedication of several years to produce a series in 32 parts which discovered the brutality and racism of the systemic police in local police services. Barely a few days ago, Trump’s Ministry of Justice “retracted” a previous report that documented the work of Biscubing.

“They can withdraw the report, they can erase their words, but they will never erase what we have done,” Biscobing told the crowd. “Not as long as we are all here. Not as long as there are people like us to tell stories that matter.”

Matthew Hashiguchi, the journalist behind the in -depth report “the only doctor” for the public media station of Reel South, referred to the growing crisis in rural health care when he took the Kudo for his deep dive report on women is the only doctor in a wide strip of rural Georgia in Clay de Clay.

Dr. Karen Kinsell was on site with Hashiguichi and received the first standing ovation of the night. Hashiguchi stressed that she had no choice but to treat anyone in need, whatever her ability to pay.

“If Medicaid is cut, we will need more people like her,” he warned.

The power of television to affect change worldwide has also been highlighted by the Kudo presented to “Mr. Bates against the post office ”.

The British narrative drama was a presentation of the scandal that swallowed up the country’s post office system in the first aughts, and the ruthless pursuit of the application of everyday laws despite proofs of their innocence. Public reaction to “Mr. Bates ”was so strong that there have been retroactive efforts to do justice to people wrongly even years later.

“This is the power of television. The power of a nation has raged by such a abuse of power,” said the producer of “Mr. Bates”, Patrick Spence, who accepted with James Strong. “Whether it’s an inspiration for all of us.”

Roy Wood Jr., a former “The Daily Show” who co-host of the CNN comedy series “Have I Got News for You”, was a ceremonial master for the evening at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel. Wood in its opening remarks went directly to the heart of the huge challenges faced by news and entertainment.

Wood praised journalists and artists from around the world who have produced this year’s winners. “You are doing one of the most daring things you can do in these times – it’s directly telling the truth,” said Wood.

“I must not do something other than plug in Jake Tapper’s book every Saturday. I work for CNN now,” Wood told the crowd. “That’s why I left” The Daily Show “- I couldn’t bear stress.”

Wood praised “Saturday Night Live” for its 50th significant season and its recognition of Peabody. He put the status of the program as a cultural institution from a strong perspective.

“” SNL “has survived DVRs, streaming wars, Crack epidemic and Y2K,” said Wood. “‘Snl’ even survived the accommodation of Elon Musk.”

Among other points of the night:

“Survivor Nova”, a study by the music festival in Israel which was a horrible mass scene as part of the terrorist attack on October 7, 2023 of Hamas which sparked the war in Gaza. The Documentary Vice News was a “deeply human story of origin and testimony of first -hand and video evidence,” said screenwriter / director / producer Gilad Thaler. “What emerged is a first draft in history.”

Thaler thanked the families and the survivors who shared their stories with his team. He also called “the first stakeholders who had the courage to demand responsibility for their government”.

Another burning portrait of the devastating war was recognized, “The Night Won’t Terd” by Al Jazeera, producer / director / writer Kavitha Chekuru. The film follows three families in Gaza while they support regular Israeli military bombing campaigns. Chekuru had a blunt message for journalists and documentaries in the public.

“Our news industry was far too silent. This silence is a bond – something that the inhabitants of Gaza cannot afford one more minute,” said Chekuru.

NBC News veteran Andrea Mitchell received the Peabody Career Achievement Honor, who was presented by his colleague from NBC News Jacob Soboroff.

“This price means the world for me, not only what it says about my work, but for what it represents on the importance of journalism today,” she said.

Mitchell has urged the next generation of journalists to be “intrepid”.

“It is not an exaggeration to say that strong journalism is essential to the very survival of our democracy,” she said.

The Scripted series recognized this year included “Say Nothing” and “Shogun” by FX, “We Are Lady Parts” by Peacock, “Baby Reindeer” and “Ripley” by Netflix and “Fantastmas” by HBO.

Joshua Zetumuer, executive creator and producer of “Say Nothing”, a story of the Riven family during Irish troubles, said that the themes of this drama of the 1970s and 80s are relevant in the middle of the political environment today.

“When bad things happen – and believe me, they happen right now – the most dangerous thing we can do is stay silent,” said Zetumuer.
