MATTHEW PERRY’S CAUSE OF DEATH LISTED AS “ACUTE EFFECTS OF KETAMINE”

Last month, Los Angeles Police Capt. Scot Williams said in an email that the police department was working with the DEA and the United States Postal Inspection Service to determine why Perry had so much ketamine in his body when he died in October, the Associated Press reported.

Traces of ketamine were detected in Mr. Perry’s stomach contents, according to the autopsy. “The exact method of ingestion in Mr. Perry’s case is unknown,” the report said.

Other conditions that contributed to his death included “coronary artery disease and the effects of buprenorphrine,” the report said. “Prescription medications and loose pills” were also found in his home, according to the autopsy.

Ketamine is a dissociative anesthetic drug with “established medical and surgical uses,” the autopsy detailed. Perry reportedly received “ketamine infusion therapy for depression and anxiety.”

His last known treatment was more than a week before his death, but the medical examiner determined that “the ketamine present in his system at the time of death could not have come from this infusion therapy, since the half-life of the ketamine is 3 to 4 hours, or less.”

The “Fools Rush In” actor was already deceased when first responders arrived and found an adult male “unconscious in a self-contained hot tub,” according to Capt. Erik Scott. “A passerby pulled the man’s head out of the water and brought him to the edge, then firefighters pulled him out of the water.”

Scott added that following a “rapid medical evaluation,” the man “died before first responders arrived” and that the circumstances were being investigated by the LAPD and the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office concluded its investigation in December.

The case was transferred to the LAPD’s Robbery-Homicide Division, which is not uncommon due to the high-profile nature of the agency’s cases.
