FRISCO, TX — The search for the Dallas Cowboys’ next head coach continues, and it’s not exclusive to candidates currently outside the building. However, with several of them also interviewed, an internal magnifying glass was sent to take a look at Brian Schottenheimer, the team’s current offensive coordinator whose contract expired at the same time as Mike McCarthy’s.
Schottenheimer, son of the late legendary Marty Schottenheimer – a former mentor to McCarthy and many other current and former NFL coaches – interviewed for the vacant head coaching job in Dallas on Tuesday.
Having joined the Cowboys in 2022 as a coaching analyst, Schottenheimer’s heir was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2023, following the departure of Kellen Moore from that position, and that’s where he spent the last seasons in Dallas.
Interestingly enough, he and Moore are now vying for the right to be named McCarthy’s successor – with Moore having recently completed a virtual interview for the job before helping lead the Philadelphia Eagles to the NFC Championship Game.
It’s Schottenheimer who has the longer resume of coaching experience between the two, despite not calling the shots in Dallas during the McCarthy era.
Technically, his coaching career began immediately after becoming a national champion for the Florida Gators, serving as an assistant for the St. Louis Rams and Kansas City Chiefs in the late 1990s, before a stint scholar who understood such a broad role. wide receivers coach for USC.
He then returned to the NFL as quarterbacks coach for the Washington (Commanders) in 2001. All in all, Schottenheimer is in the coaching ranks in some capacity – whether positionally and/or as as offensive coordinator – for about 28 years. .
It’s that experience, along with his ability to interact with players, combined with his familiarity with Dallas, that has the Cowboys keenly interested in what his plan might be to improve the on-field product.
