This was Vir’s second nomination and first win at the International Emmy Awards. His stand-up special “Vir Das: For India” received a 2021 International Emmy nomination for “Best Comedy”.
This year, Das and Derry Girls took on France’s ‘Le Flambeau’ and Argentina’s ‘El Encargado’ to win.
This award marks an important step for the actor who remembered his fight before the awards ceremony. In an Instagram post, the star revealed he even considered suicide following backlash over his satirical poem on his US show.
“The night I was called a terrorist, I was nominated for an Emmy Award,” he said.
Recalling the legal ordeal while at the hotel called Beekman, Das revealed that he had suicidal thoughts and considered jumping out of his hotel room. “Each floor was hollow inside and overlooked the lobby. I just remember standing on my floor thinking, ‘I’m screwed up, they’ll never let me… I should jump’.” .
Das concluded his video by saying, “I just want you to know that love is playing right below you. You just can’t hear it in the dark. You have to hang out until the sun.”
For the big night, Vir wore a traditional black bandhgala suit.
The International Emmy Awards ceremony takes place in New York. This year’s nominations included a diverse group of 56 candidates from 20 countries across 14 categories.
