Inside Ryan Garcia’s two-month public meltdown leading up to Saturday’s fight with welterweight champion Devin Haney: UFOs, divorce, demonic possession and a porn star proposal…but is it that this is all just an act?

Typically, boxing promotion requires a series of public appearances, interviews and perhaps some mild trash talk before stepping into the ring – just enough vitriol to give fight fans a taste of what’s going to happen. But after Friday’s Ryan Garcia-Devin Haney weigh-in, it’s hard to say what ticket holders will find themselves in for Saturday in Brooklyn.

We know it won’t be a title fight. Garcia (24-1) arrived at the weigh-in three pounds over the 140-pound limit, meaning Haney’s WBC Super Lightweight crown will not be on the line at the Barclays Center. And since Garcia agreed to pay Haney $500,000 for each additional pound, he now stands to owe his opponent $1.5 million, provided the bet is legitimate and not just some schtick.

But for everyone who attended the weigh-in, that was the least of the problems as Garcia’s two-month public meltdown moved from social media to a real-world context. A day earlier, he began a press conference by thanking Jesus eight times and ended it with threats of sexual violence: “I put my shit in your mouth, bitch!”

The two months leading up to fight week were no better. Demonic possession, UFOs and Garcia’s divorce from the mother of his newborn son are just some of the topics he has addressed since early March, when he raised alarm bells by claiming that He died with his throat cut.

One moment he’s accusing an anonymous family member of sexual abuse, and the next he’s flirting with a journalist, proposing to an Australian porn queen (she said yes!), or insisting that “TUPAC IS ALIVE AND WELL,” as he wrote on X earlier. this week.

Even Haney, one of the best boxers in the world with a perfect score of 31-0, questions Garcia’s preparation for Saturday. In response to some bizarre antics from the challenger during a joint interview with GQ, Haney turned to the camera and admitted, “I don’t know if Ryan Garcia is taking this fight seriously or not.”

At Thursday’s press conference, during which Garcia made a series of sexual comments to attendees, Haney was more blunt: “There’s something wrong with that motherfucker.”

It’s a question facing promoters Eddie Hearn and Oscar De La Hoya, with the latter having insisted that Garcia – his fighter – was ready for Saturday night.

Naturally, the rest of the boxing world still isn’t convinced, and given Garcia’s recent ejection from a Mets game and his homophobic comments on social media, calls are being heard for the fight to of Saturday is abandoned.

YouTuber-turned-boxer KSI, for his part, requested the fight be canceled so Garcia could “get help.”

Meanwhile, Hearn expressed concerns about Garcia’s camp and its handling of the troubled boxer.

“I’m worried about the people around him, it’s not even my responsibility, but what I’ve seen over the last few days and obviously what happened last night, it’s erratic behavior and erratic behavior comes from something,” Hearn said in early March.

Aside from Hearn’s cryptic remarks, Garcia has repeatedly denied using drugs, saying he “didn’t do coke” and “never even thought about doing drugs.” (Though he recently suggested a fight with UFC’s Jon Jones in another social media post, proposing both fighters be “coked out”)

But whether it’s drugs or something else, many are sounding the alarm for Garcia, who is coming off a win over Oscar Duarte Jurado after being knocked out by Gervonta Davis a year ago .

Even his recently divorced ex-wife, Andrea Celina, pleaded with fans for their thoughts and prayers.

“If all my believing followers can please pray for Ryan,” she wrote on her Instagram Story.

“We are not together and I have (sic) been in contact with him and he may seem fine but he is not,” she wrote. “I know in my heart that he is heavily oppressed. He’s not a troll, I’m really worried, as are (sic) all his family members. We are not a part of any of this and want him to get better, but it IS REAL. Pray for him.’

Henry Garcia, Ryan’s father, insisted his son was “fine” in a social media post, adding that he was “just trolling the wrong way.”

But it is difficult to characterize the boxer’s behavior as “trolling.”

Was he agitated when he announced to his followers on social media that he had died after having his throat slit? Or when he resurfaced in a social media video a few days later to claim his phone had been confiscated.

“I’m really being taken advantage of,” he said at the time.

He called Tesla founder Elon Musk the “antichrist” on Musk’s social network, X, but that was the least of his outlandish claims.

“DEMONS CAN TURN INTO CREATURES,” reads one absurd article.

“I’m afraid (sic) that my tweets are not written correctly,” he followed. “I am strongly attacked. »

Some posts seemed sincere, like when he responded to criticism after claiming he was molested as a child.

“It’s funny for people,” he wrote. “I was raped when I was two and I have proof of it and they laugh at what’s wrong with people.” (sic)’

But Garcia has since followed up that serious post with childish and homophobic allegations against Kanye West and others. He repeatedly said “fuck you” to online critics, and even threatened to follow in Mike Tyson’s footsteps this Saturday.

“I could bite Haney’s ears off,” he wrote. “Mike bit his ear. I’ll bite both. I’m hungry.’

Haney and a shirtless Garcia fought on top of the Empire State Building during a promotional stop. Then, Garcia took to social media to accuse Haney of a “hate crime” because he identifies “as a woman.”

But that was nothing compared to Tuesday’s Mets game, before which Haney and Garcia were scheduled to throw out ceremonial first pitches.

The baseball club reneged on the agreement at the eleventh hour, fearing that the two boxers would let their animosity turn into violence. Naturally, another profane social media rant followed, but at this point, boxing fans were starting to ignore Garcia’s rant.

“Yo guys, the Mets just wasted three hours of our lives,” Garcia said in the video, with promoter Oscar De La Hoya walking with him. “To say at the end, ‘You can’t throw the pitch,’ for whatever reason. There was no reason and they threw us out.

“Personally, I’m going to say f*** the Mets,” he exclaimed. “Don’t ever go to a fucking Mets game again.” F*** the Mets.

If you’re wondering where the New York State Athletic Commission stands in all of this, it’s not clear. Garcia claimed the commission required a mental health evaluation — something it has the authority to do, according to a manual provided to DailyMail.com.

Of course, that didn’t stop him from posting a video of himself making threats against the Commission.

“I’m actually going to sue you for defamation,” Garcia said in the self-shot video.

But when it comes to confirming Garcia’s claims, NYSAC cannot do so because it is limited by privacy concerns.

And for now, the invisible hand of the Commission is the only one preventing a potential catastrophe on Saturday. De La Hoya and Golden Boy have given no indication that they will pull their fighter from the fight, which would have cataclysmic financial repercussions in a struggling sport.

And unless Garcia retires, there may be nothing to stop a mentally unstable person from stepping into the ring with an undefeated champion who ranks among the best fighters in the world.
