The husband of nursing influencer Hailey Okula said that she died of a rare complication after giving birth to their son and his first child, the crew.
In an interview with Fox 11 Los Angeles, Matthew Okula said that Hailey, an emergency nurse known on Instagram under the name of Nurse Hailey, gave birth by Cesarean on Saturday. Shortly after, he said that a doctor had informed her that they were doing the RCR on her.
“She entered a cardiac arrest and doctors say that it was from a very rare complication known as the embolism of amniotic fluid,” said Okula.
Lafd’s firefighter was visibly emotional because he remembered losing his wife, saying: “She gave his life in the most noble way.”
“She could see him during a fraction of a second, and I will always remember it,” he said about Hailey and their son.
Friday, Matthew continued to honor the memory of his late wife, sharing “raw and unpublished” videos of their marriage on the Instagram history of Hailey. The videos included their first dance and their images dancing with relatives.
“I want everyone to see a little more in who Hailey was outside RNNEWGRADS,” legend Matthew one of the videos.
Hailey founded RN New Grades in 2019 to support new nurses by providing information on how to launch their careers. The nurse also explained how she and her husband fought with fertility before falling pregnant with their first child.
In an Instagram post on Wednesday, Matthew recalled how Hailey shed his soul in his career.
“She dreamed of helping the new nurses to prosper while being present for our Sweet Crew, by building a life and a legacy of which she was so proud,” wrote Matthew.
An amniotic liquid embolism (AFE) is an anaphylactic reaction that occurs when the liquid inside the uterus enters the blood circulation of a pregnant person before, during or after childbirth, according to Dr. Erin Higgins, an obstetrician-gynecologist at Cleveland Clinic Fairview hospitals.
“The body considers it as, as, in a way as an intruder, you know, like any infection,” Higgins told NBC News. “But, this can lead to a cardiopulmonary collapse, so blood pressure drops, the heart rate does not respond appropriately and patients are getting breathtaking.”
Higgins said AFE generally causes cardiac arrest and hypotension and can cause strong bleeding, heart failure, kidney lesions and liver damage.
Higgins said that the condition is extremely rare, occurring two to six times in 100,000 deliveries, and that the cause is unknown.
“Probably one of the most frightening things about this is that we don’t know,” said Higgins. “We cannot, you know, as with so many other things during pregnancy, we can say that someone has certain risk factors for complications of pregnancy. Like someone suffering from high blood pressure outside pregnancy will be more at risk of preeclampsia.”
AFE is also very difficult to diagnose before it occurs, and a patient’s condition can worsen very quickly once the symptoms are starting, said Higgins. There is also “a general agreement between experts according to which no recognizable risk factor exists”.
“It often happens very quickly and patients go from fine to this cardio-pulmonary collapse,” said Higgins.
Higgins added that the mortality rate for the condition is 10 to 90%, and we do not know why some die while others do not. The rapid initiation of the RCR and having a team that responds quickly once FA is identified is essential, she said.
Matthew recalled to Fox 11 Los Angeles the moments after discovering that his wife had been imposed on the complication.
“I make the decision-I go to the USI with my wife, or do I stay to wait for my little newborn baby,” he said. “Not the decision we thought we were taking.”
On Instagram, Matthew said that his wife’s love for their baby “was unlimited, well before entering this world.”
“She would have been the most incredible mother,” he wrote. “Her spirit, his courage and her love will live in our Son, and through all those whose life she touched.”
