Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb has deployed the National Guard to help respond to a massive winter storm that is expected to bring snow and ice to the state this weekend.
According to a press release, more than 120 National Guardsmen will be deployed starting Sunday to help stranded motorists and respond to winter emergencies across the state.
Holcomb’s office said Guard members will remain active at least through Tuesday to help respond to the storm.
Most of central and southern Indiana, including Indianapolis, Muncie and Terre Haute, remains under a winter storm warning through Monday evening, according to the National Weather Service. Parts of the state could see between 6 and 12 inches of snow, with ice accumulation possible throughout the region.
Far southern Indiana is under an ice storm warning through Monday morning, with forecasters warning of ice accumulation of up to half an inch during the storm.
“Travel may be impossible,” authorities said, and power lines and tree branches could be seriously damaged by ice buildup. A blast of frigid air will also accompany the storm, keeping ice frozen on these surfaces. Officials say any power outages could be prolonged due to cold weather and ice.
Temperatures are not expected to rise above freezing until at least Friday or Saturday across the state, officials say.
