Indian stock market enters coveted $4 trillion club for first time

The combined market valuation of all companies listed on the BSE today touched the $4 trillion mark for the first time.

The 30-share BSE Sensex index climbed 305.44 points to 66,479.64 in early trade after starting the day on a positive note.

On the back of equity optimism, the market capitalisation of BSE-listed companies rose to Rs 3,33,26,881.49 crore in morning trade, translating to USD 4 trillion at the exchange rate of 83.31.

While the BSE’s benchmark Sensex has gained 5,540.52 points, or 9.10 per cent, year-to-date, the market capitalisation (m-cap) of all companies listed on its platform has jumped by around Rs 50.81 lakh crore.

The 30-stock benchmark index hit its all-time high of 67,927.23 on September 15 this year.

Other markets valued at over $4 trillion in market capitalization include the United States, China, Japan and Hong Kong.

On May 24, 2021, the market capitalization of all companies listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange reached the $3 trillion mark.

The stock market saw the valuation of listed companies exceed the threshold of 1,000 billion dollars on May 28, 2007.

The journey from $1 trillion to $1.5 trillion was completed in 2,566 days, or just over seven years, on June 6, 2014.

The market capitalization of its listed companies reached $2 trillion on July 10, 2017, 1,130 days below the $1.5 trillion level.

It then took 1,255 days to cross the $2.5 trillion mark on December 16, 2020.
