Indian Nitu Ghanghas wins gold

Commonwealth Games gold medalist Nitu Ghanghas (48kg) added a world championship title to her name with victory over Mongolia’s Lutsaikhan Altansetseg at the showpiece tournament in Delhi on Saturday.

The Indian put up a stunning performance to defeat Altansetseg 5-0 and claim the minimumweight title in front of a huge crowd, with Beijing Olympics bronze medalist and Nitu idol Vijender Singh also in attendance .

Nitu started aggressively and used his combination of punches, jabs and hooks effectively to claim the win.

The 22-year-old boxer Bhiwani managed to win the first round 5-0.

She started the second round with a series of forehands.

When Altansetseg attacked, the Indian southpaw countered his opponent with a right hook.

Both boxers played close range and engaged in plenty of holding in the fast-paced fight, with Nitu being given a penalty for clinching towards the end of the second round.

Despite Altansetseg coming back strong in the second round, Nitu still managed to win the round 3-2.

In the final three minutes, Nitu started from wide range but quickly abandoned the strategy and returned to playing close range as Altansetseg was also given a points deduction for the clinch.

Nitu has been in indomitable form throughout the tournament, winning his first three fights by RSC (Referee stops contest).

Facing Alua Balkibekova, who eliminated her in the last edition in the quarter-finals, she skillfully adapted to negate the Kazakh’s strong point.

With this victory, the gold medalist of the Strandja Memorial 2022, became the sixth Indian boxer to be crowned world champion.

Six-time champion Mary Kom (2002, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2018), Sarita Devi (2006), Jenny RL (2006), Lekha KC (2006) and Nikhat Zareen (2022) are the other pugilists who won the world title.
