Indian banana exports to bush maize gain access to Canadian markets

India secures market access for export of bananas and baby corn to Canada

New Delhi:

The government said on Saturday that India would gain access to Canadian markets for the export of fresh bananas and baby corn.

The move is expected to benefit Indian farmers who grow these crops and improve the country’s export earnings.

Canada has approved the export of fresh bananas with immediate effect. Meanwhile, outbound shipments of bush corn will begin this month following the technical update, the government said in a statement.

The decision was taken after negotiations between Agriculture Secretary Manoj Ahuja and Canada’s High Commissioner, HE Cameron MacKay, on April 7.

“Canada has advised that the export of fresh baby corn from India to Canada may commence from April 2022 following the update of Directive D-95-28: Phytosanitary Import Requirements and Corn Domestic Movement and Automated Import Reference System,” the statement read.

Based on the technical information provided for fresh bananas by India, Canada has approved the entry of bananas into Canada with immediate effect.
