The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) officially submitted an expression of interest (EOI) to the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) to host the Commonwealth 2030 Games. The offer, sent on March 13, 2025, marks the renewed push of India to guarantee accommodation rights for the 2036 Olympic Games. 2010, delivering a show to New Delhi who experienced a record medal for the nation.

India wants to accommodate 2030 CWG to increase the chances of hosting the Olympic Games

The offer is considered to be a crucial springboard towards the ultimate objective of India to welcome the Olympic Games in 2036. Since Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed the desire of India to host the Olympic Games, there have been sincere efforts of all organs, including IOA. Securing the CWG 2030 would offer the country the opportunity to present its preparation and strengthen global confidence for an Olympic magnitude event.

If India ensures accommodation rights for the Commonwealth 2030 Games, it plans to restore several events that have been deleted from the 2026 edition. Hockey, shooting, badminton and fight are part of the disciplines that have been excluded from the CWG of Glasgow 2026.

“We are interested, and an official interaction took place with the Federation of Commonwealth Games on this subject. We have also proposed the inclusion of all the disciplines that have been abandoned from the CWG 2026,” said a source, cited by Pti.

The exclusion of these events, announced in October of last year, was an important setback for India, because they historically contributed to a large part of the country’s medals at the Olympic Games and the Asian Games of the CWG.

“This proposal aims to protect our medal prospects. An informal discussion has been launched, and we will see how the host city reacts,” added the source.

The 23rd edition of the Commonwealth Games is expected to take place in Glasgow from July 23 to August 2, 2026. The Scottish city, which previously organized the event in 2014, will again host athletes from all over the Commonwealth. Meanwhile, India finished fourth in the count of the Commonwealth 2022 games in Birmingham with 61 medals (22 gold, 16 silver and 23 bronze).
