You really never know what you will see one day given at the stadium. This mantra was fully exposed to Wrigley Field Friday afternoon in front of 39,109 fans and we all look at home.
The Cubs entered the top of the eighth 7-1. The final score? 13-11, cubs.
Let’s explain how we got there.
The DiamondBacks scored 10 points at the top of the eighth, including a Grand Colem Eugenio Suárez after Ian Happ struck a big slam at the bottom of the previous frame. Seeing an advance of 7-1 evaporating in a deficit of 11-7 made the fans agitated, to say the least.
But they were rewarded for having respected their team almost immediately, the Cubs adding six other points at the end of the eighth on the Carson Kelly circuits (his second in the match), Kyle Tucker and Seiya Suzuki.
Here is an overview of five statistics and facts from a crazy afternoon in Wrigley.
• The two teams combined to score 16 points in the eighth round. It was the most points in a round in the history of Wrigley Field, which opened in 1914 and became the Maison des Cubs in 1916, according to the Elias sports office. The previous file was 15 on August 25, 1922 in the fourth round. This time, the phillies marked one and the cubs marked 14 in their half of the round.
• It was the first time that twice combined for at least 16 points in the round since the giants and the rocks on May 5, 2016, in the fifth round. The Colorado scored 13 at the top of the Channel and San Francisco had four below in a match which was not in a way in Coors Field.
• Cubs have become the seventh team since 1900 to grant at least 10 points in the round and win the match, according to the Elias sports office. The last time it happened was August 23, 2006, when Cleveland granted a first to 10 points in KC, but won, 15-13 in 10 rounds. Before that, it was the phillies of June 8, 1989, against the pirates (first round in 10 points) – which led to a Bucs broadcaster returning to the house of Philadelphia after having declared that there was no way that they lost the match. Before that, it was the Yankees against the A on June 3, 1933 (third round of 11 points), Cubs against the Reds on September 26, 1912 (ninth row), Giants aux Braves on June 20, 1912 (ninth row) and against the Yankees on May 3, 1912 (10 to 10 points) and the A.
• But of course, it was not only the 10 races they allowed. The Cubs marked six of their own in the lower half of the English Channel. If it seems unique, it is because it is. Cubs have become the fifth team in the last 125 seasons to score at least six points and grant at least 10 points in the same round of a match. On May 8, 2004, the Tigers scored eight points at the top of the fifth, but then granted 10 to the Rangers at the bottom of the Channel in a possible defeat of 16-15. On August 3, 1986, Cleveland granted 10 points to the Yankees at the top of the fifth and then scored six of him at the bottom of the Channel en route to a defeat of 12-8. On April 10, 1977, the Red Sox granted 13 points at the top of the eighth in Cleveland and struck with six at the end of the round, but it was not enough as they lost, 19-9. The only other team to do this and win the match, as the Cubs did on Friday, was the giants of the game on June 20 aroused in Boston, where they scored seven points at the top of the ninth to take an advance of 21-2, and kept the victory despite the permission of 10 at the bottom of the Channel for a final score of 21-12.
• Cubs and diamondbacks combined for 21 points in two rounds, between the seventh and the eighth. This has equaled the record for most races scored on two consecutive rounds in the history of Cubs, by historian of the Ed Hartig team. The other time it happened was September 4, 1893, in a match against Baltimore at the West Side Grounds in Chicago. The Cubs, who struck first, scored four points in the second, then granted 10 points at the bottom of the round. The Cubs then marked seven at the top of the third and closed Baltimore at the bottom of the third.
