No other land won the Oscar for best documentary on Sunday evening. In their speech of acceptance, the directors of the film called on the world to end what they have described as the “ethnic cleaning of the Palestinian people”.

“About two months ago, I became a father,” said Basel Adra, a Palestinian journalist who was one of the four co-directors of the film. “And my hope for my daughter that she will not have to live the same life that I live now, always fearing the colonists, violence, demolitions at home and forced trips.”

The documentary, produced by a team of Palestinian-Israelis filmmakers, follows the displacement of the Palestinian rural communities in the West Bank occupied by Israeli. The villages have been eliminated to create a space for a tanking field for the Israeli army.

The shooting began in 2019 and ended in 2023, shortly before Hamas is attacking Israel on October 7.

“We made this film, Palestinians and Israelis, because together, our voices are stronger,” said Yuval Abraham, Israeli journalist and No other land co -director. “When I watch Basel, I see my brother, but we are unequal. We live in a regime where I am free under civil and Basel law is under military laws that destroy his life and he cannot control.”

Abraham then asked for a “political solution” which would ensure national rights to Israelis and Palestinians, accusing the United States of “helping to block this path”.

Although No other land was the most profitable Oscar documentary of the year, it remains Without official American distributor.

In An interview with Leila Fadel of NPR Last year, Adra said he felt uncertain about the power of the camera after witnessing violence in Gaza.

“I always thought that when people would see what is going on in the videos that we-I risk my life and that other Palestinians risk their lives to film, that would change something,” he said. “I mean, what happened in Gaza last year, I never, never, in my life, we lived in a day to see these massacres occur, and there is always the power of the international community which supports Israel.”
