In the series finale of Station 19, a near-fatal fire and a flash forward

Hot Reveal Alert: This article discusses the series finale of ABC’s “Station 19,” currently streaming on Hulu.

There has never been a wildfire like the one that ravaged “Station 19” on Thursday. The series finale.

The devastation caused by the Seattle-based spinoff of Shonda Rhimes’ “Grey’s Anatomy” is so powerful that it’s spreading to the show’s mothership. In the ultimate crossover, the overwhelmed staff of Gray + Sloan Memorial Hospital treat the injured in the season 20 finale of “Grey’s,” airing just before “19.”

The deadly fire, which began in the May 23 episode, jeopardizes the “Station 19” fire crew, which fans have loved for seven seasons, and threatens to spread to Seattle. There is a terrible fire tornado, the firefighters are forced to take shelter with a drastic tarpaulin against the devouring flames and the birth of a baby in a car in the middle of the chaos.

“We wanted to use every last penny,” executive producer and screenwriter Zoanne Clack said of the final blowout. Yet as each character faces death, the finale also hints at a bright future: each survives the carnage and experiences their own happy ending.

“We were aiming for satisfaction,” says Clack. “We used the flash-forwards to show why they live and fight when they are in peril. What will give them the motivation to keep going and not just give up?”

Clack and executive producer Peter Paige discussed the still-burning hot spots of “Station 19.”

Was there any crossover between “Station 19” and “Grey’s Anatomy”?

The action of the finale quickly shifted to Gray Sloan, where injured firefighter Theo Ruiz (Carlos Miranda) is being rushed on a stretcher to emergency surgery. Ruiz’s ordeal in the operating room is a major subplot of “Grey’s” season finale. But there are many crises at the hospital, including Captain Andy Herrera (Jaina Lee Ortiz), who recovers from his brush with death surrounded by friends and colleagues.

“We got out of the mothership and came back,” Paige explains. “We love these connections and interactions within the universe. This was an opportunity to do it one last time.”

What happened to Ben Warren in the ‘Station 19’ finale?

Ben Warren (Jason George) was a surgical resident at Gray Sloan starting in season 6, before becoming a firefighter in the spin-off “Station 19”. The dangerous work was a constant source of worry for his wife, “Grey’s Anatomy” surgeon Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson).

As Warren watches Ruiz undergo surgery, it’s clear he misses the profession. But he races to save lives and deliver a healthy baby with obstetrician-gynecologist Carina DeLuca (Stefania Spampinato). Three months later, Warren told Herrera that he was leaving Station 19 to return to medicine.

“He knew he couldn’t be as good a firefighter because his body was falling apart,” Clack says. “It was a natural progression for Ben to return to medicine.” The career change also opens the door for his likely return to “Grey’s” next season.

Warren’s flash-forward shows him watching his adult children’s graduation with Bailey. The final scene shows Pruitt Arike Miller, whom the couple raised after the death of his firefighter father, Dean Miller (Okieriete Onaodowan), during season 5. Pruitt graduated from the fire academy.

“For Pruitt, getting into firefighting was a little bittersweet, because now they have to worry about starting again,” Clack says.

What happened to Andy Herrera in the finale?

Herrera rallies her team: when she is forced to take shelter from the fire, Herrera takes the risk of slipping away and looking for vital help. Even after her recovery, Herrera has burns on her neck as she receives the biggest compliment from the departing Warren: that her father, the legendary Captain Pruitt Herrera (Miguel Sandoval), who died in Season 3, would be extremely proud of She.

With a worthy promotion, Chief Herrera gets the final words of the series by addressing a new group of cadets from Station 19.

“We wanted the final moments to show that the show may be over, but the spirit and energy of Station 19 doesn’t have to stop,” Paige explains. “We left those words with Andy. We knew that was where the show had to end.”

We see Herrera leaving the station towards a bright and sunny future.

Travis Montgomery and Vic Hughes are best friends on ‘Station 19’

In a final update, we have to mention best friend and fan-favorite couple Travis Montgomery (Jay Hayden) and Victoria Hughes (Barrett Doss). When Hughes leaves Station 19 to go to a job in Washington, D.C., her best friend and joker pal Travis shows up at the airport to join her.

“Turns out my life is where you are,” Montgomery tells him.

“Romantic comedy is part of the Shondaland vocabulary. But what if the big romantic comedy of this finale was actually these two best friends choosing each other. It seemed so right,” Paige says. “They had the end of Plato-Com. This friendship is just as precious as the other great loves of the series.”
