In Burma, more than 7,000 prisoners freed to mark the anniversary of independence – World Today News

In Burma, the junta will release more than 7,000 prisoners to mark the 75th anniversary of independence from Britain, the junta’s spokesman said on Wednesday.

“A total of 7,012 prisoners will be pardoned to mark the 75th anniversary of Independence Day,” Zaw Min Tun said, without specifying whether the amnesty would include people imprisoned as part of the crackdown on dissent.

After a brief Japanese occupation during World War II, Burma gained independence on January 4, 1948.
