Improved box score: Brewers 10, Cubs 6 – May 29, 2024

Why did it have to be the Brewers who were the first team to blow it? This gives a particularly nauseating feeling.

Shōta Imanaga wasn’t sharp (for the first time when he was introduced to MLB), and the Brewers didn’t let him get away with a single mistake. People will talk about “rust” — the Cubs gave Imanaga 10 days between starts — and maybe there’s something to that. It’s also possible that an exit like this still happens. No pitcher can be THAT good every time, and at least SOME times you’re not at your best, the other club is going to get good wood on errors.

Kyle Hendricks followed to eat up a few innings, and it looked OK for five batters, then it got a little derailed. It makes me sad to think about it right now. At least he saved the bullpen, I guess.

Offensively, the Cubs showed a little more life tonight, even if they missed some perhaps very important points. They also continue to get burned by times when really good contact comes down to finding a bad glove. Christopher Morel had several rockets, including a 405 foot shot that was stolen (hat tip). Dansby Swanson sent one that I thought was a grand slam – I got up and everything – but it got on the wall. (Hey, that’s six races there! The Cubs win the simulation game!)

Since I refuse to give Ankin Law’s “Making It Personal” nod to a Brewers player tonight, I’ll go with Ian Happ based on his home run, single and sac fly . Two-hit evenings for each of the top three in the order as well.

Complete boxed score.
